AJ Contractors began in a very natural way — not as a business plan on paper, but on the back of Alex building his own house. During that project, Alex worked closely with an architect who later approached him with a job opportunity in Inverness. Together with John, they transformed an office building into two self-catering holiday apartments for their client and friend.

What made this even more remarkable is that it all happened during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — a period of widespread uncertainty. During this time, AJ Contractors found its footing, proving from the very beginning that reliability, word-of-mouth, and quality workmanship would carry the company forward.

AJ Contractors are proud to be delivering the £1.3 million structural and heritage redevelopment of Balmacara Community Hall.

Appointed as Principal Contractor, the team is leading the full reinstatement and conservation-led transformation of a historic mill building into a modern, fully compliant community facility. Delivered in partnership with Balmacara Community Trust, Maclean Architecture & Conservation and Harley Haddow, the project showcases AJ Contractors’ capability across complex structural works, reinforced concrete construction and specialist conservation techniques.
